FIRE SAFE AT HOME PROGRAM

Fire Safe at Home is an initiative of the Tasmania Fire Service in collaboration with aged, community and disability services/agencies to assist and support the most at-risk people in our community who are 'at risk' of home fires. By identifying fire hazards in and around the home and then eliminating risks as much as possible, we can work together to help people be safer in their homes. For more information, visit the Fire Safe at Home webpage on the TFS website.

SMOKE ALARMS: YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO HOME FIRE SAFETY

When it comes to protecting your home and loved ones from the threat of fire, smoke alarms play a crucial role. At TasFire Equipment, we're committed to ensuring that you have all the information you need to keep your home safe. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Comprehensive Coverage: It's vital to install smoke alarms in key areas throughout your home. This includes bedrooms, living areas, hallways and garages. By strategically placing smoke alarms, you can ensure early detection of smoke or fire, giving you and your family precious time to evacuate safely. The Tasmania Fire Service recommends smoke alarms be installed at a minimum in all sleeping areas within a home.
  2. Regular Maintenance: Just having smoke alarms installed isn't enough. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure they're always ready to protect you. It is recommended that you test your smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries annually (where fitted), and clean them in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Additionally, smoke alarms have a life cycle and should be replaced every ten years to maintain peak performance.
  3. Photoelectric Smoke Alarms: Tasmania Fire Service recommends using photoelectric smoke alarms for enhanced safety. These alarms are particularly effective at detecting smouldering fires, which can go undetected by other types of alarms.
  4. Interconnection for Maximum Safety: For added safety, consider interconnecting your smoke alarms. This means that when one alarm detects smoke or fire, all alarms in the house will sound, alerting every occupant to the danger. Interconnected smoke alarms provide a comprehensive early warning system, giving you peace of mind knowing that you're fully protected.
